The Ghost Soldiers 8

What is significant about the fact that no one except Azar will help O'Brien with his plan for revenge?

Azar is the outcast in this platoon. He has a sick mind and says the wrong things at the wrong times. He does not have a brain-to-mouth filter and does what he wants. This is why Azar does not care that he is going against a fellow comrade. He just wants to mess with people.

This is significant because it shows that all the other soldiers that were once like brothers to O'Brien and would have helped him now no longer see him as a part of their family. They have replaced him with Jorgenson because he is no longer fighting the war along side of them.

-The fact that is significant about Azar is that he is sick minded. He does not have much of a moral for killing or hurting people. Azar calls them "specimens" as if they were not real people. He only worries about himself, which makes him the outcast.

The soldiers used to work together as one, however, they do not see O'Brien as one of them because he is wounded and is not fighting with them anymore. Azar is loyal to O'Brien throughought because he is loyal to him.

Azar is the immoral, sick person in the unit. The other's are all like brothers to each other, tight and closely knit. But, Azar is one that they all feel contempt towards in one way or another. The fact that he is the only one helping him should "ring a bell" in O'Brien's mind that maybe this is something that is taking it too far, but he doesn't get the hint. The others may feel that this might be funny, but know in the long run it is way to horrible to do to someone they care for like a brother.

O'Brien finally realizes that he is no longer one of the Alpha company. He hasn't been out in the bush sharing all the horrors with them. He's become a civilian, even to himself. The men in the company no longer consider him as one of them. Jorgenson is one of them because he's stuck it out with them and he kept Morty alive. Azar however doesn't care. He doesn't really fit in and is willing to do anything to mess with people.

Joe i agree with your view on Azar but I think O'Briens disire to get his "revenge" on Jorgenson makes him look past the fact that Azar is a loner. He will do what he has to until he has felt a eveness with Jorgenson for what he did to him.

The only person O'Brien is able to recruit to his side for his plan is Azar. This illustrates O'Brien's and the company's relation and how it has changed. O'Brien has been moved out of the group, and been placed on the rear. With O'Brien no longer being part of the group, they are no longer shedding blood together, no longer fighting and dying by each other's side, so their bonds are broken. O'Brien is now an outcast of the group, no longer apart of it. As shown on page 197, between Sander's and O'Brien's dialogue, "People change. Situations change. I hate to say this, man, but you're out of touch. Jorgenson-he's with us now. And I'm not? No, I guess you're not." O'Brien has been replaced by the group, with Jorgenson taking it. With the company believing that O'Brien is no longer apart of the group, they won't help him terrorize a part of their group. They will have no part in it, they won't act against their 'brother-in-arms'.

We know this about Azar because he "had a keener sense of justice" than Mitchell Sander's intelligence. He gave a "long white smile" when O'Brien suggested the plan of spooking Jorgenson.

The fact that the other men wont help O'Brien shows how they put their loyality with Jorgenson now opossed to Tim. They pick their teams by who is out fighting with them day to day.

Azar is a very disturbed human being, he has a very sick and twisted mind. The comments about the one legged boy just show that he has no compassion about anything or anyone. He enjoyes seing people in pain and scared, it just shows that they have a vonurability that he can exploit and use agains them. To cause others pain is a joyful expirence for him, and he takes every advantage to achieve his goal. "Disgusting Azar said Sorriest f***ng case i have ever seen..... sad he murmured" This this shows that Azar has no morals what so ever when O'Brien wanted to stop he continued saying that he never left anything undone, he just wants to inflict as much pain as possible

the other men that were with O'Brien and Azar, even after all of this time in war, don't want to kill unless they have to. They don't find any sense of accomplishment from killing someone else. Azar, on the other hand, seems to have a hunger for death. So when O'Brien wants to get revenge, Azar would be the ideal candidate to help him and the other men would be the exact opposite.

The other soldiers think that O'Brien should "let it ride" and do not think that O'Brien should get revenge on Jorgenson because he was "green" or new to Nam. It is significant that only Azar will help him, because of Azars twisted character. If that is the only person to agree with O'Brien's plan, it is most likely a very sick prank to play. Another reason why the other soldiers won't help is because Jorgenson is "with" them now. He helped save one of them and they think O'Brien should understand that "People change. Situations change."

-I agree with Kristine in a sense. They seemed to have changed sides since O'Brien was shot in the rear end and taken away to a hospital. Jorgenson has basically filled O'Brien's spot in the platoon. He could not find anyone who would help him with his "prank" besides Azar.

I was wondering why O'Brien couldn't do his prank on his own. He would have then had complete control of it and could have stopped it at any point.

We can see the trust that each soldier has with the men they're fighting with every day. They put their lives in the hands of these men, but Azar most likely doesn't feel this way so this is why he helped with the revenge. Azar could possibly just be messed up from the effects of war.

Answering Matt's question, I believe that O'Brien couldn't have done this prank on his own because of the fact that he already feels like an outsider. To do this prank on his own would have hurt his self esteem even more. He needed to feel included in a group.
